SMS alias blocking postponed to 15 September 2026

This article is informational and does not constitute legal advice.

The timeline for the new Alias Registry for SMS has shifted. Order TDF/558/2026, of 4 June (published in the BOE no. 137 of 5 June 2026) amends Order TDF/149/2025 and postpones the entry into force of the blocking of SMS with unregistered aliases.

What changes

The key date is no longer 7 June 2026 but 15 September 2026. Until then, no blocking will be applied to messages sent with an alias not registered in the Alias Registry.

Spain's Ministry for Digital Transformation justified the postponement by the "extraordinary technical and operational complexity" of the process, granting the sector just over three additional months to complete the rollout and avoid the unjustified blocking of legitimate and essential communications.

Why it matters

The underlying goal does not change: to fight smishing (SMS scams impersonating banks, logistics companies or public administrations) by requiring alphanumeric senders to be registered and legitimately linked to the company using them.

Only the deadline has moved. From 15 September 2026, operators involved in transmission will block SMS whose alias is not registered or that do not arrive from providers authorised to use it.

What to do with this extra time

  • Don't ease off on registration: use these months to register your aliases and prove their legitimate link (trademark, company name, domain…).
  • Confirm with your SMS provider that it will be ready and authorised for your aliases before 15 September.
  • Review your critical messages (alerts, verifications, appointments) so they aren't affected when blocking begins.

At Virtual Voz we keep a close eye on this regulation and help you adapt your messaging to the Alias Registry. If you send SMS with a branded sender, get in touch and we'll get it ready in time.
